Try Bolband

Bolband is an independent practice tool, not affiliated with or endorsed by IELTS, the British Council, IDP or Cambridge. Band scores are AI estimates from transcripts, not official results, and pronunciation is not assessed. Check score requirements with your university or immigration authority.

Free Part 2 cue card timer

The real Part 2 rhythm: 1 minute to make notes, then speak for up to 2 minutes until the examiner stops you. Pick a card or get a random one. No sign-up.

Describe a time when you helped someone.

You should say:

  • who you helped
  • how you helped them
  • why you helped them

and explain how you felt about it.

Ready: 1 minute to prepare, then up to 2 minutes to speak

1:00

Tip: record yourself on your phone while the timer runs. Stopped before 1:30? Add a detail, a feeling, or a then-vs-now comparison. Then paste the card and your story into the coach above for a 2-minute answer built from it.

IELTS band calculator and Canada CLB checker

Enter your four scores (or your mock scores) to see your overall band and the CLB level Express Entry will give you.

Overall band

7.0

Average 6.75 rounded the IELTS way: .25 goes up to the half band, .75 up to the next whole band, anything else down.

Canada CLB (if this is General Training)

CLB 8

Your CLB is set by your weakest skill: Listening 8 · Reading 8 · Writing 8 · Speaking 8

For CLB 9 you need Speaking 7.0: you are 0.5 band away. Practise with the full mock test above until your estimate is steadily at 7.

What the examiner actually grades

Your Speaking band comes from four criteria with equal weight. Here is what each one means and the quickest fix if you are stuck at 6 to 6.5.

Fluency and Coherence

Can you keep talking without long searches for words, and are your ideas in a logical order with linking that sounds natural?

Quick fix: Part 1: answer + reason + example, not one line. Part 2: use all 2 minutes. Swap 'and then… and then' for 'what happened next was', 'the main reason is', 'looking back'.

Lexical Resource

Do you use a range of vocabulary, including some less common words and natural collocations, and can you paraphrase when you don't know a word?

Quick fix: Stop repeating 'good', 'nice', 'very'. Learn topic collocations ('a steep learning curve', 'make ends meet'), not random idioms.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy

Do you mix simple and complex sentences, and how many of your sentences are error-free?

Quick fix: Use past tenses correctly in Part 2 stories, conditionals in Part 3 ('If the government invested more…'), and relative clauses. Watch 'I am having two brothers', 'I am belonging to'.

Pronunciation

Is your speech easy to understand, with clear sounds, word stress and natural intonation and chunking?

Quick fix: Record yourself. Check word stress (deVElopment, not deveLOPment) and that your voice rises and falls rather than staying flat.

Bolband's mock test notes the first three after every answer and estimates a band for each at the end. Pronunciation needs a listener: record yourself or ask a teacher.

Who it's for

  • I need 7 in each band for Canada PR (CLB 9) and Speaking keeps coming back 6.5
  • My exam is in 2 weeks and I have never spoken for 2 full minutes on a cue card
  • I go blank in Part 2 or finish in 50 seconds
  • I can't afford ₹1,000+ per session for a tutor's speaking mock every day
  • Nurses, engineers and students going to the UK, Australia, Canada or New Zealand

Why people use Bolband

Most people stuck at 6 or 6.5 in Speaking already know enough English. What holds them back is practice in exam conditions: running out of things to say at 45 seconds in Part 2, one-line Part 1 answers, Part 3 answers with no reason or example, and the same five words ('good', 'very nice', 'basically') again and again. Memorised cue card answers from YouTube make it worse, because examiners are trained to spot them. Bolband gives you a full mock test you can speak into, an examiner-style note on every answer against the four official criteria, and cue card answers built from your own experiences so they are easy to remember and sound like you.

  • ✓ Full Speaking mock test: Part 1, a Part 2 cue card with 1-minute prep and 2-minute talk, and Part 3 discussion, one question at a time
  • ✓ Speak with the mic or type: every answer gets a short note on Fluency & Coherence, Vocabulary, Grammar and what to fix
  • ✓ Final band estimate per criterion, the 3 habits costing you marks, and your own answers rewritten one band higher
  • ✓ Cue card answers built from your real story (your job, your city, your family), not a script you have to memorise
  • ✓ Score what you said: paste your answer and see your band range, exact errors and a corrected version in your words
  • ✓ Free Part 2 timer with a cue card bank, an overall band calculator and Canada CLB checker below the tool
  • ✓ Explanations in Hinglish, Hindi, Punjabi, Gujarati and more; model answers stay in natural English

Frequently asked questions

How is this different from practising with ChatGPT?

Bolband runs the real test structure for you: Part 1, a Part 2 cue card with the 1-minute prep and 2-minute talk, and Part 3 discussion, one question at a time. Every answer gets a note against the four IELTS criteria, the final result rates each criterion separately, and your weakest answer comes back rewritten one band higher. You don't have to write prompts or remember the format.

Can I actually speak my answers?

Yes. In the mock test tap the mic and speak; your browser turns it into text (works best in Chrome or Edge, and in Safari on iPhone). The questions can be read aloud to you. You can also type your answers if you can't speak out loud where you are.

Does it check my pronunciation?

No, and we say so in every result. The AI reads a transcript of what you said, so it can judge fluency, vocabulary and grammar, but it cannot hear your accent or intonation. For Pronunciation it tells you what to check when you record yourself. If pronunciation is your main problem, a human teacher is worth paying for.

Is the band score accurate?

It is an estimate from the public IELTS band descriptors, shown as a half-band range, not an official score. Only a certified IELTS examiner gives your real band. Use it to see which criterion is holding you back and whether you are moving up week to week.

Should I memorise the cue card answers?

No. Examiners are trained to notice memorised answers, and a learned script usually breaks the moment the card is slightly different. Each answer comes with the 1-minute notes you could actually write in the exam. Practise speaking from the notes, and reuse the same real story for several cue cards (we show you which).

Are these the current cue cards for this exam season?

Nobody outside IELTS has the official question bank. Lists online are what recent candidates report, and topics change every few months. Paste any cue card you have seen in a recent list or a coaching handout and Bolband builds your answer and the Part 3 questions for it.

What band do I need for Canada PR?

Express Entry uses IELTS General Training. CLB 7 needs 6.0 in every skill; CLB 9 needs Reading 7.0, Writing 7.0, Listening 8.0 and Speaking 7.0. Use the free CLB checker below the tool, and confirm on the IRCC website before you apply.

Can I get explanations in Hindi or Punjabi?

Yes. Choose Hinglish, Hindi, Punjabi, Gujarati, Malayalam, Tamil, Telugu, Bengali, Urdu and more for the explanations and feedback. Model answers and test questions stay in English, as in the real exam.

How much does it cost?

You can try it free every day (2 results and one full mock test). A 30-day pass with unlimited mock tests, cue card answers and scoring is ₹499 / $10, and a 1-year pass costs 5 months' worth. No subscription to cancel. One IELTS retake costs far more.
